In 2022, the Völklinger Hütte World Cultural Heritage Site will host the Urban Art Biennale for the sixth time. Since its launch in 2011, the biennale has been presenting new developments and approaches in international urban art, and today it forms an integral part of the urban art landscape. During the biennale, the entire Völklinger Hütte site enters into dialogue with the art forms deriving from street art and graffiti. Many site-specific works are created for “their” special place in the World Cultural Heritage Site. The biennale includes room installations, works on canvas, sculptures, stencil graffiti, paste-ups, augmented reality and murals.

Urban artists have travelled to Völklinger Hütte from all over the world to leave unique artworks in the World Cultural Heritage Site’s industrial landscape, most notably the wild garden where the coking plant once was. These artists include the street-art duo Os Gêmeos from São Paulo, Vhils from Lisbon, the French pochoir pioneer Jef Aérosol, Mambo from Los Angeles, and the Franco-British artist YZ, to name but a few.

With their gigantic machines, reclaimed natural areas and rust-brown dust barriers, the huge grounds of Völklinger Hütte, a former ironworks, offer numerous atmospheric spaces that are perfect for generating an exciting, fruitful symbiosis with urban art. In 2022, Völklinger town centre will also play an important role in the Urban Art Biennale as the exhibition will go back to its roots, extending to the World Cultural Heritage Site’s urban surroundings.

Beikirch Kaya

Beikirch Kaya

Hendrik Beikirch has already been a guest of the UrbanArt Biennials several times. On the occasion of the 6th Urban Art Biennale, he mounted the portrait of Kaya Urhan, one of the many smelter workers with Turkish roots, on the façade of the Saarstahl building in Rathausstraße and with this work made an important contribution to the culture of remembrance and contemporary witness work at the Völklingen Ironworks.

"For me, the portrait of Kaya Urhan creates the connection between the Völklingen Ironworks and the people who have shaped this city and region with their work." (Hendrik Beikirch)

Press comments on Urban Art Biennale

Maria C. Schmitt, ARD Tageschau, 1.Mai 2022

Rudolf Schmitz, FAZIT, Deutschlandfunk Kultur, 1. Mai 2022

Andrea Dittgen, Die Rheinpfalz, 6. Mai 2022
